My Scariest Movies

Seems like my movies here are usually rants so today I am celebrating Halloween by giving you my most disturbing movie experiences ever. I don't scare all that easy, but these two films well, they have scarred my brain for life. I get the creeps when I watch them even now.

The Exorcist

This one had me hiding under the covers with my best friend at the time, Jennifer. This is bar none the scariest film ever for me. It gets me right smack in my Catholic upbringing and the performances in here are nothing short of brilliant. The profound evil that creeps into Regan and Chris MacNeil's lives makes me want to grab my grandmother's rosary and pray til my voice is only a whisper. I literally hold my breath each time Fathers Karras and Merrin enter that room. You can feel their fear, their dread, their determination, but, I can't look away, I'm as caught up in the evil as the priests. Here's that unnerving spider walk, which they did with a real acrobat on a wire.

The Entity

As a woman I find this one particularly disturbing. Barbara Hershey gives an incredible performance as a woman who is raped and beaten by an unseen force in her house. No one believes her, they think she imagined the entire thing. The entity continues to attack her violently while the person she seeks help from, her psychologist, tries to get her to commit herself to a psychiatric institution. It's not the f/x in this so much as the situation. Raped and having no one believe is horrific enough, but not having an attacker you can call the cops to arrest is a complete nightmare. Added to that, the very people you seek help from think you're batshit crazy. Considering what I went through at a point in my own life, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about this film. Unfortunately, I could not find a clip of the bath scene  that wasn't in a montage so you get the trailer which is kind of cheesy.

There you go, two movies that leave me wanting to runaway screaming for my daddy. What films truly scare you or disturb you?

  1. the only horror film that has ever truly scared me was WRONG TURN, the first part. When those monsters started chasing the kids up in the trees I thought I'd poop myself like a pigeon, I was that scared :)

    1. Wrong Turn was very suspenseful and yes, that tee scene is pretty scary. :)

  2. Haven't seen The Entity in ages. I barely remember it, to be honest. :)

The Exorcist is arguable the scariest movie ever made, and still give me the chills.

    Excellent choices, hon.

  3. The Exorcist was terrifying when it came out. Sadly it's been imitated so many times, the original has lost some punch. But for its time, nothing could trump it for scares.

    1. The Exorcist hasn't lost any of it's punch for me. It still haunts me whenever I watch, particularly the director's cut, which has all the extended scenes considered too intense for the theater at the time.

  4. I remember being a kid and hearing about how people who went to see The Exorcist would scream and faint and throw up and all kinds of nonsense befitting the beginnings of an urban legend. I was so frightened of that movie without ever having seen it. Finally watched it as an adult, and it was scary, but I don't think there was any point I felt like fainting. :P

    1. LOL I remember my older cousins talking about all the hype and craziness when Exorcist came out. They had something similar when Carpenter's The Thing came out as well as the first Paranormal Activity movie. As scared as I was watching this one I never felt like fainting, either. :)

  5. The Exorcist is a Gold Standard classic, and no matter how many times it's been imitated has lost none of its power.

The Entity is a scary movie for sure - one I haven't seen in years.

Truly disturbing...The Exorcist is up there. There's a little cheesefest from the 90's called Skinner that disturbed me and made me a little queasy - so I'll add that one to the list.

    1. I agree, Craig. The Exorcist stands up very well and is still very disturbing.

If you get a chance to watch The Entity, I'd love to talk about it with you.

Skinner...Will be checking out as soon as I can.

  6. I've never seen The Entity, but I definitely need to check it out. I agree on The Exorcist for sure. Shudder. I'm planning on watching it tomorrow! I read the book in a matter of hours, all one sitting. So good.

    1. The Entity is one film that will leave you feeling a bit vulnerable and disturbed for sure. The Exorcist book and film are top notch. I just re-watched the film myself with a good friend. hard to sleep after. :) Have fun!

  7. Rrraahh, I've NEVER ever seen Entity. My gawd, I really need to check it out in the (hopefully) near future.

As for The Exorcist... well, I'm one of the few who prefers "The Exorcist III" which is IMO much, much better AND scarier. Have you seen it?

    1. Definitely give Entity a watch. It is is very creepy and disturbing.

I have never seen Exorcist III as II was so bad for me. I'll have to rectify that and give it a shot.

    2. Exorcist III ignores the second one. In some kinda way, it follows the original, but actually it's a movie of its own.
Super-powerful performances of George C. Scott and Brad Dourif, mindblowingly awesome dialogue sequences, striking images, mesmerising atmosphere and one of the creepiest scenes in movie history.

Check out the infamous hospital scene:

  8. I found the Exorcist to be kind of funny, though I might just be desensitized. The one movie that sticks with meas being disturbing is Session 9.

    1. A lot of people are e-sensitized to The Exorcist because of all the imitators and parodies. t is quite engrained in pop culture. Session 9 was creepy. :)

    1. The Exorcist is still the grandaddy of scary movies for me and has lost none of its impact. The Entity is very disturbing and hard to watch even for me a seasoned horror fan.

  10. BOTH of these movies are incredibly scary. I remember seeing the "rape" scene in The Entity. It was disturbing. And The Exorcist send two of my friends to a child psychologist.

  11. Oh my gosh, I won't even watch the trailers that you have provided for us ... you are so right, these are two of the most scary movies ever. I read the book of The Entity first and it was sooooo scary! It followed her in the car, and to the hospital, if I remember correctly. Didn't they recreate her bedroom on a set to study the phenomenon? It wouldn't let her go. Very, very scary.

I remember watching The Exorcist in the theater; it was so scary! This was back in the 70's (?) when there were not ghost and evil shows on t.v. and that poor little Regan with her projectile vomiting and head screwing all the way around, I can still picture it all! Creepy, creepy. Plus, it was based on a true story, though the kid was really a boy.

Hope that you have a fun Halloween and that none of that weather system effects you.

    1. Carla's story for The Entity really is terrifying. I have not read the book, but I think I'll try and track it down now that you've said it was very scary. I love a good horror read as well as film.

The Exorcist was based on a true story and I'm blown away by what happened to the kid. There are things that we just can't explain and I think that's why both of these films scare me so much.

Thanks and Happy Halloween to you as well!

  12. Exorcist scared the you know what out of me... And the cutest boy in my class sat behind me and kept whispering in my ear, "This is going to get scary." I was horrified and thrilled at the same time, lol. The madness of the movie, the crowd and the cute boy...augh! I never stopped having a crush on him. (Oh, he looks like Blaine on Glee). I can feel the mood, of the crowded cinema and his sweet whispers in the dark.... ;D
I now want to watch this flick!!! We just rented Enter Nowhere, from Netflix. I heard about Entity, haven't seen it...
I'd say Amityville Horror...did a number on me, especially when I would wake up at 3:13am and close my eyes...hoping I wouldn't see 3:15....

Hope you holiday is fun! I love to dress up and scare people! ;D

I completely forgot to add 'The Exorcist' to my list of favourite horror movies when answering Maynard's questions. Yes, it's über-creepy! The novel is too!
