First Loves: A Blogfest

Happy Monday, yo! I'm kicking off my week with Captain Ninja Alex J. Cavanaugh's First Loves Blogfest. Here we admit to our first film, first band, first book and first person we loved. How intriguing is this? Are you all set to read my firsts?

First Movie:
E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial It was the first movie I had seen without my siblings in tow and the story of this poor alien so far from home just wormed its way into my heart and never left. I still sob when the little guy breaks his connection to Elliot and "dies."

First Band:
Duran Duran were the gods of my teenage idolatry. Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls on Film, Rio, Union of the Snake...Those tunes still get me going. Sure, I grew up and moved on to Aerosmith, but Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, Roger, John and Andy Taylor will always hold a place in my heart. Here's a bit of the Fab Five for your listening pleasure...

First Book:

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. It introduced me to the wonderful world of Narnia and I still reread the whole series on occasion.I mentioned in an earlier post that this was also the book that inspired me to become a writer.

First Love:

Oh man, I have had so many hard crushes and a wild, passionate fling or three where I thought I was in love, but no. I can honestly say that in all my years I have never been in real, honest romantic love. Ever. My first hard crush was Jimmy, the older brother of a classmate. He was a dazzler and made my heart beat faster when I was 13. Do I regret never being in love? Sure. But it's not like you can plan your feelings. Maybe one day, before I hit 97...Who knows?

  1. Excellent picks! The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is one of my favourites too!

  3. Melissa, one day it will hit you!
And anyone who says they didn't cry when ET dies doesn't have a heart.
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!!

    1. You are most welcome, Alex. :) This was a lot of fun and I agree. How can you not cry at ET?

      And thanks. :)

  4. Ha ha ha, I am starting to feel old. ET was a great movie but I had fallen in love with movies long before that one came out. The same with Duran, Duran :) Chances are Melissa, that love is bound to catch you sooner or later and when it does...look out :)

    1. Thanks, Siv. I sure hope so. But until then, I still have my Johnny Depp. :)

You're only as old you feel. There are days when I'm 7 and days when I'm 157. Hugs!

  5. "ET go home" :) That movie made me fall in love with Drew Barrymore. Awesome!
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is a great book!

    1. Drew was so adorable wasn't she? Little Gert. I'm so happy you share the love for Narnia. :) C.S.Lewis rocked my world as a kid.

  6. ET used to scare the bejeeses out of my when I was a kid, though I'm not sure why.
I've still not read any of the Narnia books; I should correct that.

    1. Don't worry Jamie. There are some pretty intense scenes that startled me and still catch me unawares on re-watching occasionally.

You should so read the Narnia books. They are epic. :)

  7. You'll find the right person eventually! Just keep that heart wide open :)

Great choices - love ET :)

    1. Big Hug, Dezz! Romance may have kicked us in the teeth for now, but we will overcome and maybe find our princes someday. If not, we will become the happiest singles ever. :)

  9. You've unleashed some fun nostalgia, Melissa. There's no group like Duran, Duran. Their tunes make me jump up and dance. Yet they're not at all cheesy, just great music.

I'm convinced only the few very lucky ones find real, lasting love. The rest of us have Johnny Depp and Alex P. Keaton. (I think we have the better deal.)

We do. :) Johnny is my main squeeze forever. Over 26 years and he has never given me an ounce of stress.

  10. I think E.T. is a runaway favorite today. I have yet to read or see any of the Narnia series. I really need to do that.

    1. That little alien sure does have our heartstrings aflutter even after 30 years. :) You should read Narnia. Lewis created a tremendous fantasy world that I think you will enjoy.

  11. E.T., Duran Duran, and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe are all terrific choices! I love each of those.

This was the third time I have seen E.T. chosen as the movie.

  12. Movies - I clearly remember how much I fell in love with "DuckTales the Movie: Treasure Of The Lost Lamp" and "The Neverending Story", 2 of the very first movies my parents rented for me in 1990. In fact, they had to rent it for me several times because I couldn't get enough of Atreyu & Bastian, and Uncle Scrooge & his nephews. :)

Music - The mighty "2 Unlimited" were the very first band that I totally adored, and I admit that I still like tunes like 'No Limit' or 'Let The Beat Control Your Body' - long live Eurodance!! ;-)

Book - "Anne Frank's Diary", the first book I read by myself as a child. A fascinating, almost mesmerizing book. Still love the tragic story of poor Anne.

First love - Simone, a nice girl from my neighborhood. I was 7, she was 6. I wanted to marry her and live with her in a house by the sea - little boys, big ideas :-D

    1. I love that story about you and Simone. You were such the little romantic. How cool!

Diary of Anne Frank still gets me. I have reread it several times and still choke up at the abruptness of that last page. You keep reading, totally nto the Secret Annex daily life and then Wham!

Ah The Neverending Story. That was a great movie and starred Noah Hathaway aka Boxie from one of my fave sci fi shows, Battlestar Galactica the original.

  22. Great choices! But then I knew my pal Mel had great taste in - well, everything! I'll go with Maynard and throw down my answers here too -

Movie - Star Wars. Got to look George Lucas in the eye, shake his hand, and tell him, too.

Music - The Monkees - the show was on in syndication in the afternoons when I got home from school - and I watched it religiously. Then my brothers got me the Best of album for the next gift giving occasion - although my jackwagon eldest brother made sure to tell me they didn't play their own instruments - like I cared at 10! (And I now know they only didn't play the instruments mostly on the first few albums! So suck it, bro!)

Book - The Mouse and the Motorcycle - read it about a zillion times as a kid.

First love - Kelley from Detroit Michigan - it's a very long story I may tell in full somewhere somehow. Suffice to say the rural Illinois boy was much more smitten by the big city girl than vice versa. But I still have fond memories of the best moments.

    Cheers!

    1. Thank you, my friend. :) The Monkees are the best! I remember watching that show in syndication. I had no idea that it was an old show that had long since stopped production.

Star Wars is a most excellent film and yes, The Mouse and the Motorcycle is awesome. I read that to my nephews.

  26. Hi Melissa! What a great post. I went to the theater with my aunt to watch ET when my second baby was just new (she slept through the whole thing). I love that movie and still have a copy handy. Drew Barrymore. Dang.

Thanks so much for all of the sweet things and Mother's Day wishes! I would love to see some pictures of your new place.

    Hope your week is wonderful,

    Kathy M.

  27. I'm sorry but I couldn't make it for the blogfest. I had a really bad week last week and had not time for blogging whatsoever. It's all good now, and I'm glad to be back on track.

Not a fan of rock music at all, but I was in love with E.T. as a kid. Haven't read the Narnia books, but I loved the first movie. :) Hugs!

  30. Great blogfest! All very good choices. It's hard to compete with that creepy little alien. And now we're clamoring over Prometheus. Some things never change, do they? Anyway, who needs love when you have Michael Fassbender? I don't even swing that way and I wouldn't kick him out.

  31. Hi, Melissa, I'm driving by on my Post A to Z rounds (I'm gonna hit all participants' blogs if it kills me!). (And it just might!) ;-) Nice to meet a fellow Duran Duran fan! I dig that you chose the "Union of the Snake" video - it's a fave.
