I was stunned when I found out Davy Jones had died yesterday. He was a powerful presence from my childhood that I will sincerely miss. I LOVED the Monkees, they were my one of my most favorite shows when I was kid. On my local station it was syndication heaven... The Monkees, the Munsters, the Addams Family and the Banana Splits Show. All in a row!! I could not ask for a better schedule.
I crushed on Davy big time, that voice, that smile and those eyes accentuated with the sparklies. ;) He was the littlest Monkee, the sweetheart who won over most of the girls and I just loved him. He made my six year old heart beat faster. I wanted to color with him and imagined having him play dolls with me and of course, sing to me. Yes, I was a born seductress. Of course, I hadn't a clue at the time that he and the rest of the band, Mike, Mickey and Peter, had all moved beyond the show, LOL
Here's a few of my fave Monkees moments and songs in honor of Davy.
And here's a clip from the ep entitled Monkees in a Ghost Town. Look who have as the thugs: The Wolfman himself, Lon Chaney Jr. and Len Lesser...Uncle Leo from Seinfeld.
He was a cool guy and a great singer. Daydream Believer is one of the greatest pop songs of all time.
ReplyDeleteRest In Peace, Davy :-(
Wasn't Davy just one of the best? I love Daydream Believer so much. I agree, it really is one of the greatest pop songs of all time.
DeleteThe news made me sad. Love Daydream Believer.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful song. The news of his death saddned me as he was such a good person by all accounts, a genuinely nice person.
DeleteI never got into the Monkees, but 'tis sad nonetheless. Godspeed, good sir.
ReplyDeleteHe really was one of the good ones. A light gone out.
DeleteThat's really sad. Used to love them when I was a kid.

The Funnily Enough
The Monkees were a huge part of my childhood. IT really is sad.
DeleteSo sad. I loved them too (I think I must have been watching early 80s repeats though). Daydream Believer is a great song.
ReplyDeleteThe reruns were how I discovered them. Though I had no idea that they were reruns. LOL Daydream Believer is still one of my all time favorite songs.
DeleteI was such a Davy Jones fan as a child. He always seemed so sweet. He will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI had such a crush on Davy, too. And yes, he really was so nice by all accounts. I loved his interviews.
DeleteThat was really sad. Sixty-six is too young.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could live to be a hudred and sixty-six. What a beautiful spirit gone too soon.
DeleteI've never heard of him before, but he seems like a nice guy, Melsy :(
ReplyDeleteHe really was one of the best, Dez. I think you would have loved his positive message and how he always spread good cheer and love whereever he went.
DeleteI was so surprised when I saw this news! I loved the Monkees too, the clips bring back such fun memories from my childhood.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very sad shock. The Monkees was just awesome. The show was definitely a huge part of my childhood and I still love it.
DeleteSo Sad about Davy Jones. He was adorable on The Monkees, and I'll never forget when he was Marsha's crush on The Brady Bunch. He even appeared in one of the silly Brady movies, and he stole the show! Julie
ReplyDeleteI remember that BRady Bunch episode! I didn't realize he had been in one of the BRady movies. Too cool! It doesn't surprise me that he stole the show. :)
DeleteThis really bummed me out. Those guys seemed eternally young - and not just because we were watching the show in reruns - even when they would gear up another 75% reunion tour - dang it Mike! - they just seemed like the same lads of yesteryear. The Monkees were "mine". Unlike a lot of things where it seemed I only liked it because one or both of my brothers did first (which was true a lot of the time) they didn't care for the Monkees; they were both Beatles guys; they didn't like the Monkees because they bought in to the whole "don't play their instruments" thing which was true for the first three albums only! After that it was all them - except for once in a while. (Micky's a talented singer, songwriter, and performer - but he'd be the first to admit he really was never more than an actor playing a drummer) I liked Micky's manic energy(fave songs by him: Goin' Down and I'll Get Back Up On My Feet); I liked Peter as the "dumb one" (favorite songs by him - Your Auntie Grizelda and For Pete's Sake); I liked Mike in his green knit hat (favorites Papa Gene's Blues and What Am I Doing Hanging Round); and I liked Davy - because he would fall for girls like I did (he was VASTLY more successful at catching them) and he would get cartoon sparkles in his eyes (Fave songs Daydream Believer and Valleri).I am still a massive Monkees fan - been really contemplating get the complete series by hook or by crook - and I listen to their music often - from those first studio sessions where Don Kirshner made sure only the boys' voices were used; straight through the last real group album after Peter had left the group. (Wouldn't you have thought Mike would be the first to jump ship? Well, he did for a couple of episodes of the show - covered with a lot of hilarious asides by the other three to camera: "I wish Mike was here!" and later he didn't come back for a lot of the reunions - but that was more from being out of practice as a musician than because he didn't want to be there.) I got to see Davy, Micky and Peter in their 20th Anniversary tour twice - but I am still bummed that I'll never see the four of them perform live. Who is going to help us believe our daydreams now?
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, these guys were eternally young. Every time I saw them on an interview, they seemed like the same as when they had been on the show. Laughing, joking, always being positive. I love how Peter appeared on tv as someone's dad's old bandmate like on Boy Meets World and Seventh Heaven.
DeleteI used to love, love watching this show and I still do. There's a local station here that runs the Monkees every Saturday from like 3-5 and I watch whenever I can. I really have to get all the eps on DVD.
THe Monkees accomplished so much more than many people give them credit for. They sold millions of albums and even outsold the Beatles in like 1967 I think. Sure they were brought together as a studio band, but they had chemistry and I think the show is sheer genius. I get all of the gags now and still crack up. Mickey in drag is still one of the best gags ever. And those expressions on his face! Davy was always so charming and sweet. I always loved how he panicked and how he fell in love with those sparkly eyes. :)
I am so jealous you got to see three of them live. I never had the chance. This world really is a little colder now.
My mother sure spent a lot of money on Tiger Beat and "16" fan mags for me to have pictures of Davy to plaster on my bedroom wall. I loved Daydream Believer, but when he sang about Valerie, I was so upset! What if he really did love her?? But I got over it and forgave him. A good man gone. RIP, Davy.
ReplyDeleteAh Tiger Beat...I remember it well. J had all thosters, etc covering my walls, too. I just loved Valerie and Daydream, what great songs they were. Davy will so be missed, Craig up above said it was like the Monkees had this atmosphere around them, they were young forever. Too sad. :(
DeleteI had such a crush on Davy. Man, do I feel old. KC, right above me talks about her mom being a fan. I am a dinosaur.
ReplyDeleteI am hopping around trying to visit all of the entries for my "Get Fired Up" blogfest. I hope to announce the winners on Monday
I'm a dinosaur, too. :) Davy really was one of the greats and I miss him so much already.
DeleteI can't wait to see who your winner are. What a great blogfest you had, helping all these other bloggers get out the word. I have a You Should Know Friday that I do and have met some really fantastic bloggers along the way.
Yep, I was another girl who would have loved to be trapped in Davy Jones locker :)
ReplyDeleteWasn't Davy just the cutest? Man, is he ever missed.
