Reviews And A Re-Cap

Happy Dec. 27th!! Well, are we sufficiently recovered from our food comas and hang-overs? Only 4 more days til the drinking and eating binges on New Year's Eve. Hard to believe there's only 4 more days and 2011 will be a bad memory. I don't know about you all out there, but 2011 was an odd year for me. Bookends with bad shit with lots of good stuff and good friends in between like the cream of an Oreo cookie. Can't wait for it to be over though as this month has sucked out loud.

I just finished two reviews, one for Fright Night 2011, which I liked. I thought Marti Noxon's script really respected the source material. Here's the link. I also saw Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. What an incredible movie! Check it out at The Movie 411

I had an awesome Christmas with my family. We shared lots of laughs, watched our Bulls pull off a HUGE upset of the Los Angeles Lakers AT the Staples Center. Hell to the yeah!! Suck it, Kobe! However, all was not right with my sports world. Our Bears were crushed by our hated rivals, the Green Bay Packers. Ugh! But, my Derrick Rose and my Joakim Noah made me feel better. I hate the Lakers as much as I loathe the Packers.

I got some really wonderful presents that truly were awesome. I got a digital camera from one of my dearest friends, which totally blew my mind. D rocks! He has had my back for nearly twenty years and I wouldn't know what to do without him or my sister from another mother, S, who also happens to be his fiancee. I scored some great DVD's thanks to my mom and my sisters. Sons of Anarchy, Burn Notice, Somewhere in Time, The Wolfman, oh and Fright Night 1985 from the coolest film geek I know, R. In the past he's gotten me titles like Alien from L.A., Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Night of the Lepus, Them!, Plan 9 From Outer Space and The Brain That Wouldn't Die. I worship at his feet, you know.

My puppy Vegas came through her first Christmas with lots of toys. I mean like a dump truck full. LOL Her spoiled? Never! She has this little monkey that she just has been tearing into and carrying it everywhere. It's hilarious.

My fave part was hanging out all day Christmas Eve with my youngest sister. We always have a great time, but this year we wrapped our gifts together and faced the last minute crowds at the store like troopers. We went to midnight mass at our church with my mom and the choir sounded terrific and the whole place looked amazing. They darken the church except for some candles, then process the Baby Jesus to the manger at the start of the service, lighting each section until the altar is lit up at the last. It's really gorgeous.

How was your holiday? I'd love to hear from you.

  1. Tell us how you really feel about Kobe!!
Alien From LA? I've seen the Mystery Science Theater 30000 version.
And of course puppies are supposed to clean up on Christmas!!! I'm sure Vegas chewed on a few extra things as well.
Melissa, really hope 2012 is YOUR year!

  2. @Alex LOL, yes I am rather vocal about Kobe and the Lakers.

MST 3000 always had the most interesting flix. I miss the Bots!

You know Vegas got into some wrapping paper and other things. :)

Thank you for 2012 wish, my friend.

  5. Hi, Melissa,

Sounds like you had a whale of a time this Christmas. I can also tell that you're big on movies. I need to relax more and do all that good stuff. Like the look of the blog too. All the best for 2012 when it arrives.

  7. Sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas!! Fantasticaliscious!

Best part of my Christmas? We live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and are, of course, Mavericks fans. Went home to see our daughter who is a huge Lakers fan. (She used to live in California) Anyway, I found a Mavericks sticker and stuck it on the rear window of her car while she was inside the house.
I'm still waiting for THAT call. Hehe.

I hope 2012 brings you new journeys and new treasures, Melissa!

    Best to you~~

  8. Sounds like good times around the Imaginarium! Lakers did fall apart. They are in transition. To what, I'm not sure. ANd Sherlock Holmes is high on my priority list. Wonder if I can take the kids to it?

  9. It sounds like you had a great Christmas! :)

Hooray for digital cameras--I got one, too. It's so nice to be able to take pictures of everything, isn't it?

Our holiday was nice. Overall it was quiet, and my mom got a day off from work.

    I hope you have a wonderful 2012!

  10. So I take it you're not a Kobe fan. Me either!!

I KNOW the new year has got to be better. I'm staying on the positive track.

Great DVD collection. You are one lucky movie buff.

  11. Sounds like you had a fantastic Christmas!! I know what you mean about Vegas getting a lot of presents. I mean I almost think my dog gets more gifts than me anymore, which is okay I guess he is the baby. : )

  12. And to top it off: Lindt's! Woohoo. Sounds like a fabulous Christmas.
My holiday was nice and fairly uneventful, just the way I like it. Now to hunt down some real chocolate.
    Keep enjoying.

  13. PS So glad Kobe's wife finally came to her senses. What took so long? Geeze. (I don't follow sports but I loathe the rapist. Did I say that?)
    Hugs and smiles,

  14. I'll be glad to see 2011 go, too. Although receiving Charlie Hunnam under the tree would end the year on a highpoint. I'd settle for a Harley if he's busy.

  15. I'm glad you had such a good Christmas after a rough time. I hope 2012 is a much better year for you!

  16. @J.L. Thank you so much! I love, love movies and find lots of inspiration in them. Hope 2012 sees us all with tons of success. We are an awesome community.

  17. @vics LOL no , not Vic Vegas, the nephew named her after Las Vegas. He think it sounds like the coolest place. Little does he know...Mischief sounds adorable, I can just see her rolling around in those toys. :)

Scrooge McDuck, man did I love him!

I hope this will be the Age of Awesome, too. 2012 is going to be GREAT, I think!

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Bryce I love that move with the Mavs sticker. Too cool! Thank you so much Bryce and all my best to you and your family as well.

  19. @Stephen LOL "...in transition. To what,I'm not sure." That about sums them up.

You'll love Sherlock Holmes. I took my 12 year old nephew and his friend, so I think that age group is appropriate. Saw some younger kids, but I thought that was a bit much.

  20. @GoldenEagle Thank you! I love my new camera. I took lots of pictures of all the lights and stuff. I hope 2012 rocks for you!

  21. @Giggles Mary, was I too strong in my opinion of Kobe? ;)

I hope 2012 brings us all the very best. It would be nice to see a year that's not so full of crisis and tragedy.

Thank you! I feel very fortunate to have such a collection and friends who are able to score such eclectic titles.

  22. @Nicole Christmas rocked this year. Isn't just fun to buy to for the puppies? There's so much out there that I can't resist. Here's our babies! May they not break our banks. LOL

  23. @Robyn Lindt's is the best! And they did you know that they do home parties like Tupperware and Party Light Candles? Completely awesome!

I'm so glad the poor woman came to her senses, as well. What a pig! ;)

  24. @Julie Finding Charlie under the tree was aces. I'd take a Harley, too. In fact I got a Harley calendar which features some really wicked bikes. I have always wanted one of these bad boys. We have the best taste, I think. ;)

  25. @Annlisa Aww.. Thank you so so much. I hope 2012 brings you and your family lots of joy and all good things.

  26. 2011 has been a totally rock-out year from beginning to end for me - I'm actually a bit sad to wave goodbye to it. However - I'm going to embrace 2012 as though 2011 was merely the appetizer to a decades-long all-you-can-eat buffet.

Just wanted to thank you for your wonderful review quote, which I now use all the time. ((hug)) Hope it makes you smile to know that the serialized Scorpius story - which will wrap up shortly - will be heading the way of Peredur and his Brotherhood by this spring.

  27. I've seen Fright Night a few days ago and I absolutely hated it - review in the next few days.

Very excited about SH2 which I will see today. Love the work of Guy Ritchie and I also totally adore SH1, which I just watched yesterday for the umpteenth time - you see, I'm fully pumped for Grandmaster Sherlock :-)

I'm anxious to ring in another year, time for a fresh start!
I look forward to more fun from you next year! ATB

  29. The holiday weekend was nice - spent it with my wife's family - 3 1/2 hour drive - instead of my family - 15 hour drive - for the fifteenth or so year in a row. Really missed spending it with my family, especially when my niece sent me pix of my brother and dad hanging out on Christmas Eve. And as has happened for the last several Christmases with my wife's family - they managed to once again give me some kind of superbug - Monday I was fine, felt something coming on in the back of my throat Monday night - woke up feeling crappy Tuesday, stumbled through work, continued to feel terrible until bedtime, accidentally took DAYquil instead of NYquil, worst night's sleep in the whole history of sleep, and took today off work to try to get on top of it. I really hate getting sick every year between Christmas and New Year's. Your holiday weekend sounds amazing - glad you had such a sparkling time! Here's to 2012 - barrelling towards us at a good clip now!

  30. @Mellisa I also like Wolfman. It's not a great movie but it's quite good and I enjoy it a lot.

How fun you saw Bulls defeat Lakers. I wish to see NBA too but the localTV hasn't given the schedule yet and I don't have cable :(

  31. Just read your Fright Night review, sweetheart, and although I totally disagree, I still found your review pretty awesome. :)

I hope you're looking forward to the New Year's Eve as much as I do. It's a big thing here in my country. :)

  32. @Julia Aww.. I am honored that you are using my quote. Too cool! And I am so, so happy that Scorpius is going to be published. Whoo Hoo!

I love your outlook for 2012. I hope you have your best year yet. All good things, my friend. :)

  33. @Maynard not many people liked the new Fright Night. I am looking forward to reading your review.

SH2 rocks! It is one of the best movies I've seen this year. And now I want to go a re-watch the first.

  34. @Ella I can't wait for the new year and I wish all the best to you and your family. I love your comments and I love that you find my skewed take on things funny. :)

LOL we were troopers. Those crowds were merciless. :)

  35. @Craig Feel better quickly, my friend. I hate getting sick at this time of year as well. One year I had two infections going on that put me out of commission from the day after Christmas until the last week of January.

Here's to an awesome 2012 for all of us! We are going to rock this apocalyptic time. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. @bokunosekai Yay!! Another Wolfman fan. I'm not alone. :)

I hope you get to see the NBA very soon. It's so exciting. Maybe I can make you into a Chicago Bulls fan. :)

  37. @Nebular Thank you for going to read my review, sweetie. That means a lot. I know we disagree, but that's the beauty of great minds...Our differences.

I am very excited for New Year's Eve. I hope you and your family have smashing good time. Here's to an awesome 2012!

  38. Oh, Melissa, thank you so much for stopping by to see me today! I am sorry that I am so behind on visiting; you have posted so much great stuff. Happy Birthday, Happy New Year and I'm glad that you had a fun and memorable Christmas with your family.

Things are going fine here, I am getting back into the swing of things after our doggy dying unexpectedly and then the holiday stuff. Next week we will be in San Antonio to watch our grandson Tyler play QB on the Army All-American West team.

So, if I get behind again, I'll certainly catch up. Hope this is the best year yet for you!

    Hugs,

    Kathy M.

  39. I was wondering if that Sherlock Holmes movie was good. thanks for your input. Sounds like you've had a wonderful Christmas season. I can't believe this year is almost over. Honestly, it blows my mind how fast time goes by these days. (That's cuz I'm getting older and I'm slower at everything. Dang!) Happy New Year, Melissa!

  40. Awesome! Sounds like a great time!

  45. Fright Night review is up.

SH2 disappointed me - the first half was pretty good, but the 2nd half felt muddled and confusing.
Also, the whole movie was IMO too long and I hated that they turned Sherlock into a campy and annoying action-hero.
    Sorry, 5/10 from me.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Oregon No worries, Kathy! So sorry to hear about your poor doggie, how awful. :(
