Happy Birthday !! It's Party Time

Sing it with me now..."Happy Birthday to..." Nah, I won't make you sing. Just come on in and join my party. Alex Cavanaugh kicked things off yesterday. Thank you Captain Ninja Alex! To kick this celebration into high gear today, I've got angels, demons, zombies and of course, werewolves all lurking around the premises so beware. LOL You gotta watch the wolves, they tend to bite and claw when the cake comes out. And what a cake it is. Red Velvet for my sexy self. Delicious, no?
Yes red velvet is my favorite cake and I intend to have a slice. I'm diabetic, but this will have sugar-free frosting, so I'm being partially good. I also intend to raise a pomegranate martini to you, my friends. You are the best! Of course, I'll be careful NOT to end up like this guy below. I did that one year and yeah, it was pretty ugly.
This is a rough birthday this year, but I'm reminded of one my best birthdays ever, which came a few days after the occasion. In 1997, I was spending my first b-day and Christmas without my grandmother and I was depressed as all get out. My birthday came and went and so did Christmas. Then out of the blue, my best friend called from North Carolina. She called me the day before New Years and told me to get my rear in gear and head to O'Hare airport on New Year's Eve. There was a ticket waiting for me. I flew down on New Year's, spent the holiday and the whole following week with her. It was the most incredible gift and we had such a terrific time. I remember that week so well. We hung out, went hiking and just laughed our asses off.

Do you have a favorite birthday memory? A birthday drink/cake? Talk to me. As a gift, I'll select one person to win a download copy of their choice of one of my stories. I'm going to head back into the party and hopefully hook up with a werewolf. ;)

  4. Favorite Birthday memory:
18th birthday, me and a couple of friends in a mountain cabin in the middle of nowhere. Loads of crappy Eurodance CDs, loads of cheap booze, loads of silly drinking games and loads of fun!

    Favorite Birthday cake:
my Mom used to make incredibly delicious Tiramisu for me when I was younger.

    Favorite Birthday drink:
nothing special, but for my parties I always bought kids' paper cups with Barbie or Sailormoon motifs on it. You don't believe how silly it is to drink your beer or your Schnaps from a barbie paper cup :D

  5. @Jeremy Wise man that Jack. Thank you for the grape juice toast and good cheer. I shall hoist a Fat Tire beer to you later on this evening. :)

  6. @Alex Thank you! We make a great team, I think. :) Brenda has been my friend now for 20 years and she is indeed treasured. I'll pass along what you've said and I know it will brighten her day.

  7. @Maynard Thanks for the good wishes! This isn't my cake in particular, but it's a close one and oh yeah, super-tasty. ;)

Barbie cups?! That is a wicked fun idea that I'm going to have to try. LOL I love that. And I love your b-day memory. Nothing like good friends and plenty to drink in the middle of nowhere. Tirimisu mmm... that's another awesome cake.

  9. Happy 25th birthday, Melsy :) I'm sending you a stripper later on when you get boozed up on pomegranate martini :)
I loved the story about your best friend's surprise airplane ticket :)

I'm not big on celebrating birthdays. When I was a kid, my parents never really celebrated my birthday with big parties or anything similar, so I never developed a habit of celebrating it in any special way.

  10. Happy Birthday to you!!

I can't help it, I still get excited for birthdays (of course I declare the entire month as mine).

I flew to Las Vegas with a bunch of friends for my birthday once. It was a great time until my boyfriend slept with my best friend. Ah, well, at least they bought me dinner first.

  11. Happy Birthday, Sweet Melissa!! Child, don't you worry about birthday numbers. They're a good thing. Every one is the path to either victory for attaining your goals or the vodka bottle.:)

  13. Happy Birthday

I don't really like cake (I know, I know, people continually tell me there is something wrong with me), so most of my birthdays consist of beer and Chinese food

  14. HAPPT BIRTHDAY, SWEETHEART! Just forget about all your problems and have a lot of fun tonight.

As you may know, my father has a birthday today as well - he turns 54, and we had a nice family party at home. I had 2-3 glasses of wine, and now I feel a bit dizzy, but still great... If I could sing well, I would have done it now... Lal lalalalaala.... LOL.

  16. Happy, happy birthday to you!

I have a special birthday cake: Triple Death By Chocolate. A layer of chocolate fudge cake, a layer of chocolate pudding with chocolate chips, a layer of whipped cream with Heath bar (or your favorite candy bar) bits. Then repeat those three layers two more times. It takes a BIG bowl. Preferably a trifle bowl to make it look pretty. Mmmm.

  17. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MELISSA!!!

This time of the year, especially for folks like us who live in cold weather states (snow...and more snow), provides a perfect setting for birthdays. The Chicago area must be absolutely gorgeous during the holiday season. Enjoy the scenery.

Imbibe recklessly and prod all those around you incessantly. Birthdays are, for many of us, that one day of the year where we can act foolishly and GET AWAY WITH IT, lol :)

  29. My fifteenth birthday had to be one of the best. We had just moved into a house with a swimming pool, and my parents went all out to give me a huge party! Everyone that I loved was there, and the world was filled with the sweet scents of springtime and birthday cake. It's a wonderful memory, not even for the gifts I received, but for all the love that went into it.

  30. I know I am a wee bit late but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope you had an amazing one and you better of had more than a slice of that delicious Red Velvet cake!! You deserve it! Thanks for sharing your favorite bday memory! It sounded pretty awesome-a nice escape. : )

  31. Happy Birthday! Hiking in North Carolina in January? You must have been warmed by the glow of friendship, because NC isn't exactly the tropics.

My happiest Bday memory? The one and only surprise party I ever had - it blew me away. Wierdly enough, it was close to yours in time - '98 maybe.

  32. Happy Birthday, Melissa!

Sorry you're having a rough bday. I just picked up some kahlua at the liquor store. Want some? Bet werewolves like it, too. Don't know if aliens do, but we can find out.

  33. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MELISSA BRADLEY!!!

I like the party you got going! Hope the entire weekend is amazing for you!

Favorite birthday memory: Okay, I'm working on the pilot for the series Touched by an Angel. I of course am entirely infatuated with star Roma Downey. Well, we're shooting late into the night on this ten day shoot, day nine. I am locking up (film jargon for keeping intruders away) outside the house we're shooting in, and I do something I seldom ever did: I sat down in Roma's cast chair as the Witching Hour chimed away. About twenty minutes into the new day, the current scene broke up for a major relight. Roma comes out of the house and walks straight over to me in her chair. She put her hands on the arm of the chair and leaned in to me - at first I assumed to ask me - as she sometimes would in her delightful Irish lilt - for a cup of tea. But she keeps coming closer...and closer...and suddenly Roma Downey is kissing me - and it's a real honest to goodness several seconds long kiss. My toes literally curled. She finally pulled back and said - did you guess it? - "Happy birthday." Yep, when midnight came my birthday started, which my pals in the makeup and hair departments must have told Roma. I floated through the rest of that evening's shooting. The next day we were shooting the last day, and it brought a present from Roma, another long kiss, and would have brought a stripper to our lunch tent, but the "talent agency" refused to let a dancer come to perform in a giant tent for 100 crew and cast people - which is what Roma wanted for maximum embarrassment for me - and would only have sent a young lady if the dance occurred in a trailer with me and maybe a few others. Is it any wonder that Roma was and is my favorite actress I ever worked with?

  34. Happy Birthday! Please don't mention cake--I just came back from a Christmas party where I ate 3 pieces of chocolate cake in addition to some other stuff. Oh, okay, maybe one more piece. I love cake!

Not a favorite memory, but once in junior high I told my mother that I wanted to have a surprise party. For a week before my birthday I saw my sister talking to people that I had told her were my friends and I knew I was going to get my surprise party wish. Party day came, I pretended to be surprised, and actually I was--none of the people that I thought of as friends came and just a handful of my sister's friends were there. I guess I was not the most popular guy in school.
I'm sure more people would show up at your party.

  36. @Nicole You're never too late! And you know I had more than one slice of cake. And more than one martini. LOL

  37. @Rusty Well, anything above 25 degrees in January is warm for me. Being in Chicago, it normally runs to 25 and lower with severe wind chills. :)

I love surprise parties. Never had one myself, but it sound like yours was a total blast.

  38. @MPax Kahlua, eh? I love that with a little vodka and half and half. I think the werewolves would go for it. And bring those aliens, the more the merrier. :)

  39. @Craig Roma Downey?! That is awesome!!! I used to love that show and watched it with my grandmother. What a wicked cool b-day that was. Yeah, I can totally see why Roma was one of your fave actresses to work with. :)

  40. @Arlee That's terrible!! I had a party like that once. It was not surprise, but of all the people I invited only 3 showed. I did like high school and did not have too many friends back then. I'm a party girl now though. :)

Chocolate cake is fave, too. I would probably eat a whole one of those if I could. :)

  41. AND I missed your birthday!! How come? I check Facebook for birthdays all the time...:( Belated birthday wishes for 15th December (day before mine, which may be why I missed yours as I had a week of super hectic celebrations)

Wishing you a year of blessings and much happiness!
