Another Bout Of Depression And A Teenage Date

Hi again, Imaginarians. I'm so sorry I went away again for the last couple of weeks. I had another bout of depression and it hit me pretty hard. I'm taking meds but sometimes I get overwhelmed. I hope you will forgive the silence. I've been on Facebook, but even that has been sporadic.

Anyway, did you all enjoy the weekend? I went with my nephew on his date. He's only 14 and needed a ride to the theater. He and his young lady went in to see Ride Along and I went into Frozen. They enjoyed the film immensely and well, I liked Frozen, but didn't love it. The singing got to be too much. I did enjoy the fact that it was about sisters who save each other and did not rely on the trope of the kiss from Prince Charming. Afterwards, we met up with the girlfriend's mother and younger sister for dinner at The Dixie Kitchen, a wonderful restaurant specializing in Louisiana style food. Pulled pork and mashed sweet potatoes with fried green tomatoes. Yum!

As thanks for taking him, my nephew helped me shovel last night because, yes we got more snow. Again. Another 6 inches and yes, I'm still sore. We live on a corner lot so there is a lot to shovel. I'm really grateful for my nephew as his date pulled me out enough to be social and I've gotten a bit of spark again.

I also watched the debacle of the Super Bowl. I was so not into it this year and even the commercials annoyed me. Too contrived for direct emotional responses rather than about the products. I know beer can be a patriotic drink for some, but come on. And I will not even get into the sexism of some these ads. I've got plenty to say in a later post about the sexism that is certainly running rampant through this country, particularly in politics.

I have not written, but I did manage a few sentences yesterday and made some changes to another ms. I know, shoot me now. I can't wait for IWSG on Wednesday. HELP!!

So what is the good news around here. I've been so out of touch.

  1. Hey Melissa! I'm sorry the depression has been getting to you. Going out with your nephew and his girlfriend was a good thing. I have a friend who fights depression (he's bi-polar) and he says the longer he hides from people, the worse it gets.
Felt the same way about Frozen. Really good, but not great.
Denver forgot to show up last night. I always hope for a good Super Bowl, but that wasn't it. And yes, lame commercials. Like they didn't even try. The only one I liked was the one with the Muppets.

    1. I appreciate the thoughts and belief, Craig. It means a lot. My nephew begged me to take him lol as he didn't want his mom to do it.

  3. Sorry to hear about depression, sister :( It's really heard not being depressed in today's world....
I also liked FROZEN, but thought that TANGLED, BRAVE and some others before were much better. But it was still sweet and nice. Maybe lacking some special magic that HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and EPIC and OWLS OF GA'HOOLE had.

    1. Hugs, Dezzy! You are so right, it is easy to get depressed nowadays. Tangled is definitely one of my faves along with Epic. They had great magic. More movies like that for sure.

  4. I thought both the game and the commercials were disappointing. I can't even remember one I liked now. Of course, I also was drinking a healthy amount of patriotic beer (Sam Adams...so, it really was patriotic...)...

I haven't seen Frozen, but the inventory specialist I worked with last week apparently has and BOY, was he obsessed with it. Listened to the soundtrack over and over again all night long.

    Take care.

    1. Thanks, MJ! I love Sam Adams, definitely a fave brew. Unlike my usual football MO, I was so bore, I flipped channels several times to The Walking Dead marathon. The walkers were more entertaining.

  5. Hope things stay on the upswing for you. I liked Frozen but my daughter loved it. Superbowl was just background noise to me.

  6. So sorry to hear about that Melissa. It can be crushing, so know that I shed a "man-tear" for you. The Super Bowl was a joke and the commercials were boring. Is this the restaurant? 'cuz it sounds delicious www.dixiekitchenevanston.com

  7. I'm sorry to hear you've been depressed, Melissa! I'm glad your nephew got you out and about for a bit, and that it pepped you up a little.

Yeah, the overt misogyny in politics lately is disturbing. It feels like we are going backwards. :(

I missed the Doritos time travel. I'll have to find that on You Tube.

  9. Hi Melissa. My heart goes out to you. Depression is a toughie. I'm taking Cymbalta for my migraines and have been told it's causing ill side effects so I'm tapering off it now. Holy cow, I thought migraines were bad. The withdrawal from these meds is horrid. Anyway, it's good to see you back.

    And, Walking Dead on Sunday!!!

    1. Oh my gosh, Elsie. You hit the nail on the head. I've taken Paxil before and the withdrawal was terrible. I pray your migraines taper off some day. Thank you very much for the kind thoughts.

And yes! Walking Dead Sunday. :)

  11. I am reading this late but I'm so sorry to read you've been struggling with a particularly difficult bout of depression, Melissa. I hope you are doing better now then you were at the start of the month. I've struggled with that as well and it's difficult not to want to just hide from the world. The date with your nephew and his girlfriend sounds cute. :)

Take care and best wishes to you!
