Hey there! Happy Monday and wow, did I have great weekend. I took my mom and fellow Trekkie to see J.J.'s newest installment in the Trek series, Star Trek: Into Darkness. Holy cow, there are no words for what an incredible experience it was. I loved this movie from opening frame to the last and each nanosecond in between. As did the first film, it paid homage to both the series and the films with a deft touch that only a devout Trekkie could have.
Like the original Star Trek II, this is the film that breaks Kirk. It smashes him down and forces him to dig deep, to find just what he is willing to sacrifice in order to prove that he deserves the chair. He takes on an enemy that is more cunning and powerful than he ever thought possible. There is no re-writing the Kobayashi Maru. The script is pure genius, taking elements from the first Trek II and reworking them to fit the altered time line. The dialogue is sensational, never straying into over-emoting or taking the cast out of character.
And speaking of the cast, the entire crew is back plus a cameo by the awesome Leonard Nimoy. The chemistry sparks between the characters, with Pine finding a deeper level with each actor. The scenes with Kirk and each of his fellow actors are alive with tension and amazing fluidity. Particularly with Quinto. The only weakness was the casting of Alice Eve as Carol Marcus. She was the only one who appeared to have no chemistry with Pine, she seemed distant, unsure, like the dialogue was troublesome and she could not project the right emotion.
The action sequences are mindblowingly huge, fast and furious. I was strapped into my seat on a wild rush. The fx overall were incredible and I did not need to see this in 3D to enjoy the brilliance. The other downer is I know that J.J. is going to be tied up doing Star Wars for the next few years, so Star Trek may go on the back burner, which is a shame as I am totally invested in this new crew.
So what did you all do this weekend? See Star Trek? Thoughts?
Drat! I tried to read this spoiler-free but caught the name of the cameo. Hopefully it doesn't spoil anything. What a fun ride Melissa! It's good that you and your Mom could experience this together.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Maurice, but it was already out of the bag before the film opened. :) It won't spoil a thing, i assure you. Everything is amazing and there is so very much I left out. Thanks! I'm happy Mom and I could do this together.
DeleteThought it was awesome! I reviewed it today as well. Very solid script. Now the series has come into its own. The third movie can go anywhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Alex! This series has definitely come into its own. I really want a third movie, too so I hope we don't have to wait terribly long. 4 years for this was had enough. :)
DeleteI thought it was fantastic, too, Melissa! Just one of the best overall movie experiences I've had. And I agree, 4 years is way too long to wait for the next!
ReplyDeleteHigh fives, E.J.!! I could not agree more with you. I can't wait to see it again. :) And yes, fur years is entirely too long to wait for another.
DeleteI like how every person in the crew gets equal screen time. Everyone is important.
ReplyDeleteHi Michael! Yes, that's what I loved about this cast, too. Everyone got screen time even when they weren't on ship. Loved that interstellar phone call. :)
DeleteZachary Quinto is my favorite though. He Is Amazing!
DeleteI loved Star Trek into Darkness! The entire film is pure awesome. It had good chemistry between the Enterprise crew and excellent performances by all the actors. Intense action sequences. The film was also very fun to watch. I was transported to another world and that's what I want from films. Star Trek 2 did that for me. I DID NOT WANT IT TO END THOUGH.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Trekkie, but this was one of the most memorable cinematic experiences I've had this year thus far.
Fist bumps, Livia as I echo everything you just said. :) This was an incredible movie that transported us into a different universe all together. I didn't want it to end, either. I just wanted to keep right on going with Enterprise as she headed out.
Deletecan't wait to see Karlito, Zacharito and John Cho :) I'm kinda shocked that the film didn't earn more than that horrid superhero trash that's been breaking record recently :(((
ReplyDeleteI know, I was surprised that it did not earn closer to Iron Man's totals. I love all three of these guys and will watch anything that they are in. What a sizzling hot trio. ;)
DeleteI've heard it's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt is Morgan! You should totally see it.
DeleteI loved it! The scene with Spock and Uhura arguing had me rolling. I doubt it will catch Iron Man III (over a billion now) but I hope it does well enough for many more sequels.
ReplyDeleteSpock and Uhura had me laughing too. They have this wonderful chemistry together. I hope that there are alot more sequels, too. Can't wait to go on missions with the crew. :)
DeleteI saw it this weekend, and I loved it, too. I really want to go see it again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Alice Eve's character, but the rest of the movie was so fantastic, it's really a minor thing.
I need to go see it again, ASAP! What a thrill ride. I could not get enough. And yeah Alice really is such a minor quibble. She never took away from the greatness of the movie, though. :)
DeleteI'm seeing it later this week. I love the new cast too.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! aren't they just fantastic. I love each and every one o them. :) Have fun!
DeleteIt was so awesome! I saw it last Thursday night. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteHey Mary! Yes, it was completely awesome. I am raring to go again. LOL
Deletei loved this movie... i know i did.
ReplyDeleteHIgh fives, Jeremy! I loved it, too and want to go again.
DeleteSeen it, loved it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comments about Alice Eve. That gratuitous underwear shot was so pointless.
But Pine and Quinto stole it. I had guessed the twist from the trailer, but there were people sobbing in the cinema as The Wrath of Khan was twisted.
Amazing movie.
Hi Donna! Yes, Pine and Quinto stole the show. I loved their chemistry, especially when they were trying to stop each other from risking too much. And that final scene when Kirk was well, you know. And he was saying he was scared. I was a mess. And high fives for Alice Eve, did not get that underwear scene at all.
DeleteReally wish I could have loved it as much as you did. I'm a hardcore Trekkie but this film just felt like a retread, performances were solid but I was expecting a more original story.
ReplyDeletePoint taken, Daniel, but while the time line was altered, they did leave room for destiny so to speak. Meaning that the same stuff will happen, but in different ways. I really dig that they are keeping to some things, while getting all original with others.
DeleteI'm going to give it anothr watch if I can while it's still in the theater.
DeleteLOVED IT! But then - you knew I would! Glad you did! Rockin' review!
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you, my friend! I knew you would love it, too. It was fan-freaking-tastic!
Deletei may have to see it...
ReplyDeleteHey Tammy! You should totally see it, see it right now. :) Not that I am trying to give your orders. LOL
DeleteI'll have to show my husband your review. He's looking forward to seeing it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by for my blitz. I had a great time!
I can't wait to be strapped in and thrusted into another world, lol ;D I hope to go over the holiday weekend~ Thanks Melissa for this review! You rock~
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you loved it so much. It's very cool, too, that you and your mom are trekkies.
ReplyDeleteBe well, dear friend.
xoRobyn
It was great fun. I laughed. I cried. I liked the funny hats. But I do now wonder what's next for the rebooted film series. Are we going to see remakes/homages/piss-takes of all the original films? And who's going to play Captain Picard when the time comes?
ReplyDelete(Pity the Benedict Cumberbatch shower-scene didn't make it!)
