Favorite Old School Cartoons

Okay, so with my nephew's b-day just passing and me buying him some DVD's of his favorite animated shows with names like Kick Buttowski, Fish Hooks and Johnny Test, I thought I would take a trip in the Way Back Machine and revisit some of my childhood cartoons. Here we go...

Speed Racer

Oh my God I loved this show. I was in like first and second grade, just dreaming of the day I could ride in the Mach 5 with Speed and fly in the helicopter with Trixie. If I remember right, my Big Wheel served as the Mach 5. Here's a bit about my ultimate ride.

Scooby Doo

My love of all things scary has its foundations with that crazy Great Dane and the crew of the Mystery Machine. I wanted to hunt ghosts and monsters with the gang. Then when I got older and realized why Shaggy and Scooby were always hungry, I wanted to party in the Mystery Machine. It also had the most rockin' theme song.

Thundarr the Barbarian

Who knew 1994 would be such a bad year? I was such a sucker for this post-apocalyptic cartoon. I wanted to fight evil wizards alongside Thundarr, Princess Ariel and Ookla the Mok, whatever the hell a Mok was.

Battle of the Planets

An American version (some would say ripoff) of the Japanimation series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, this was one of my absolute faves. I wanted wings to be a part of the Whirlwind Pyramid and to fly in the Phoenix, defending Earth from Spectra and Zoltar

The Banana Splits Adventure Hour

This came on in syndication when I was a wee tot and I was enthralled with the live action and animated sequences like Danger Island, Arabian Nights and The Three Musketeers. I also wanted to play with Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork. And of course who can forget the song?

What are some your favorite childhood cartoons?

  1. Nice choices :D I remember watching the Banana Splits movie over and over as a kid. That's a great bit of nostalgia right there.

  4. Banana Splits! You are talking old school now. Scooby Doo was my favorite as a kid. I've seen every episode dozens of times.

  5. @Nicole Daria was awesome! I watched her when I was in college.

I'm happy you enjoyed my description of Scooby Doo. That was a revelation that left me laughing for days and in awe of how they got away with that.

  7. @Alex Yeah Banana Splits is way old school. I must be showing my age. LOL I think I've seen Scoob and the gang a few hundred thousand times. I have the DVD's and am now showing my nephew, who's only been exposed to the newer eps. The new ones just aren't the same, though they are still good.

  8. @iZombie GI Joe rocked and so did Transformers. I had the action figures, too. It's great because my nephew is into them as well and he think I'm the coolest.

Clutch Cargo...OMG I have vague memories of watching that for some reason. White-haired dude with a boy and a little dog...Man, I am showing my age big time.

  9. A lot of those were my favorites growing up too. You know, every single Scooby Doo episode I was just sure they'd unmask the monster at the end and find out it was another monster underneath. It scared the daylights out of me.

  11. I've never seen any of these.
As a kid we mostly watched TOM AND JERRY, BUGS BUNNY, COYOTE AND THE ROADRUNNER and similar :) I also loved The Smurfs, Asterix and Obelix, The Muppets...

  12. Those are awesome.

My ultimate kid cartoon was Kimba the White Lion, early anime to which I was devoted. I'm pretty sure there are aspects of Kimba in both my warrior Peredur character, and my Scorpius character, when I really stop to think about it.

  13. I had to sit through Scooby Doo, Looney Tunes, and Captain Planet when I was younger.

Teletubbies almost invaded my childhood until I told myself to grow up to spare myself some misery.

  14. Cool post! You brought me back to my childhood! :) Scooby Doo is such a silly cartoon, but it was so much fun.

  15. Thundarr and Battle of the Planets look excellent -- beautifully executed. I've never heard of either.

My favorite cartoon as a kid and on into college was the older Popeye episodes. I loved the artwork in those. I didn't care much for the later episodes that were in color.

  24. @Arlee Thundarr and Battle were tremendous. Such complex stories for half hour shows. Sometimes they would even do episode arcs.

I loved Popeye, too. Especially the really old ones with Sweet Pea and his nephews.

  25. @MPax Wacky Racers were awesome! Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly ruled. And I LOVED The Jetsons. :)

My favorite not that old such shows were Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles and that one with the action figures ... Stinky Diver was one of them but I can't remember the name right now.
