Hey Imaginarians, before we go any further, Russell, formerly of Chaos N Mayhem, has now started his own new film blog called 1:37 Exactly. It rocks. He talks about anything and everything film, his posts are witty, thought-provoking and brilliant. His style is friendly and engaging, encouraging some really great discussions. Go on and check him out. You'll love him as much as I do.
Now, before I get into my review, I have a confession. No nothing really salacious, although...Just kidding. I'm not about to confess to THAT unless serious money changes hands. ;) Anyway, I have a side of me that is a terminal 12 year old. I laugh and laugh at things like bodily functions and other really low brow stuff. Much to the chagrin of my mother. I can't help it. It's this sense of humor that brings me to Bridemaids, one of the most hysterical movies I have ever seen.
The script is wicked funny and smart for the most part with a few scenes that were really chick flick and not in the comedy vibe. But, hells to the yeah, the ladies went down and dirty and bought the freakin' tee shirt up in here. I laughed til I choked in certain parts, especially the bridal shop food poisoning debacle. I admit, my bestie Nancy and I rewound that scene more than a few times. I had a headache from laughing so hard. Maya Rudolph frog-walking across the street then finally shitting herself is bar none one of the most hysterical things I have ever seen. I can sympathize with her pain. Almost. All I can say is Girl's Night Out, too much beer and El Taco Burrito Palace #2, the mortal enemy of stomachs and intestines everywhere.
As if Maya weren't enough, Melissa McCarthy just blew me away. My sweet Sookie has transformed into comedic blockbuster ala Chevy Chase. She was the most brilliant part of this movie. I watched her scenes again and again. The rest of the cast was terrific. I loved Rose Byrne as the snobby boss's wife and Kristen Wiig as Annie, the bride's childhood best friend. Their constant need to upstage each other is psychotic and great fun to watch.
Bridesmaids, like Bad Teacher, shows off the dirtier side of female humor. That we can be just as raunchy, low-brow and in-your-face as the guys. I hope H-wood takes notice because I want to see more movies like these.
I saw it with some friends and it was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI really need to get my girlfriend to watch it, it's her kind of a movie.
@DWei I think your girlfriend will really enjoy it. It really was one of the most hilarious movies I've seen.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, hon, and I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. The script was smart and the cast - incredible. It didn't blow me away, but I enjoyed every minute of it. :)
ReplyDeleteI'll see it on NetFlix sometime. Would you believe this was a film my wife wrinkled her nose at?
ReplyDeletethis was a pretty darn funny movie. the best part, imo, was when mm's character drove past the MC. so unexpected!!!
ReplyDeleteAND!
i thought the romantic interest character was phenomenal. :)
LOL a 12 year old, are you sure it's not a 10 year old? :PPPPPPP
ReplyDeleteI've putting off watching BRIDESMAID because I can't stand the lead actress, I don't get that kind of comedians, but I'm extremely tempted to watch it, because you know how much I adore Melissa McCarthy! I hope she becomes new Sandra Bullock or something
I saw it Sunday with the missus and she demanded I return the rented dvd to the store immediately and go buy here a copy so she can have it forever.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was really good. I was also proud of myself because I figured out the love interest policeman was the guy from the IT Crowd... Actually, I didn't double check that, but I'll go on the assumption that I was right.
Anyway, agreed. The movie was awesome.
I have a feeling you'll get your wish and Hwood will be putting out sup-par 'Girls gone wild' style comedies for the next couple of years. And it'll be all your fault.

The Funnily Enough
Not really my kind of movie--but thanks for the review. :)
ReplyDeleteYou rock Mel! Thanks so much for the shout out love, you made my week! I can only hope to be a half as good as your very very kind words :)
ReplyDeleteSo you know how we agreed whole heartedly on how amazingly funny 'Bad Teacher'was? I'm sorry to say this, but I just didn't enjoy 'Bridesmaids' anywhere near as much...
I thought that the pacing was a little lacklustre. There would be a funny moment followed by too long a break between laughs followed by another funny moment.
I completely agree about Melissa McCarthy, she was on! She had some of the best lines and just proved that she has the presence and comedic skills to take her far. I am really looking forward to seeing her in more movies. Rose Bryne was strong in her supporting role (as expected) and even though I didn't really like the character she delivered a strong performance. The last performance I really enjoyed was Chris O'Dowd (from the IT Crowd) who I hope will be in more movies because his type of goofy loveable "loser/nice guy" role is always welcome on screen.
Overall I do agree that women's comedies are changing, and who doesn't appreciate the dirty side of female comedy, I just don't think it was as good as 'Bad Teacher'.
@Nebular Thank you, sweetheart! I don't enjoy comedies all that much, but the ones I do, I really, really love. There were parts that could have been better, though. Maybe they'll fix that for the sequel. LOL
ReplyDelete@Alex It's available on Netflix so see it as soon as you can. And I know more than a few people who shook their heads at this, too, so I know it's not for everyone.
ReplyDelete@vics Wasn't the cop awesome? I loved him and yes, when MM drove past with all the puppies in her van, that was pure awesome sauce. It was totally unexpected. :)
ReplyDelete@Dezz Ten might be more like it LOL. ;) I hope Melissa becomes the new Sandra, too. She owned this movie, sweetie.
ReplyDelete@Rusty I have to go buy my own copy, too. I forgot O'Dowd was in The It Crowd. That was a great show.
ReplyDelete@Mood You're right, it will be all my fault. There are those of my circle who agree wholeheartedly with you on my taste in comedy. :)
ReplyDelete@Golden Glad you enjoyed the review even though the film is not to your taste. :)
ReplyDelete@Russell I made your week?! That's too cool. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Bad Teacher was better, but the pacing here in Bridesmaids wasn't as off for me. It dragged, sure and some of those moments could have been eliminated all together, but I'm hoping they'll clean all that up for the sequel.
Melissa McCarthy is just terrific and I can't wait to see more of her on screen. Chris O'Dowd was amazing. I love that type of character, they are so much more interesting to see as opposed to the John Hamm character or even Bradley Cooper's character from Hangover.
The ladies are definitely opening up newer, more salacious realms in comedy and I hope it continues.
my be i need boyfriend :)
ReplyDeleteGreat Review! Loved Bridesmaids! I generally love raunchy humor but I love it even more when women are the ones being dirty for once. My girlfriends are always grossed out with what I find funny so it's nice to hear you enjoy them as well. I too hope Hollywood develops more female crude behavior films!! It's long overdue. : )
ReplyDeleteI watched this movie a couple of months ago. I thought it was hysterical.
ReplyDeleteI watched this the other day and although I found it funny in parts, I was a little disappointed.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the scene with the speeches and the roommates was absolutely hilarious!
ill give it a try and see what i think of it
ReplyDelete@2peeps Hi! Thanks for dropping by. A boyfriend is very nice. I think I want one, too. :)
ReplyDelete@Nicole OMG aside from Nancy, most of my girlfriends are grossed out by my humor as well. I'm so glad we have similar tastes. :) Here's to more crude female flicks!
ReplyDelete@M.J. It really was one of the most hysterical movies I've seen. I love that so many people appreciate the crude female humor.
ReplyDelete@Mind The speeches and roommates were classic. It was a little uneven over all and I was a bit disappointed, too, in some spots. I found Bad Teacher to be better overall.
ReplyDelete@Tony Hi and welcome to the Imaginarium. Hope you continue to drop by and visit.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll enjoy Bridemaids very much.
This movie was not what i expected. I quite liked it. Yes, more movies like this.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't enjoy i as much as you did. The humor was incredible and a few scenes made me laugh my ass off (toilet scene, airplane scene) - sadly there were way too many sequences where literally nothing happens and which bored the fuck out of me. The ending was also pretty lame.
ReplyDelete6/10 I liked Bad Teacher more.
@Maynard I thought Bad Teacher was better, too, but this one had me going, especially the bathroom and the frog-walk across the street.
ReplyDeleteLoved this film for bringing so much fun and laughter. At the same time, the BFF moments too.
ReplyDeleteGreat share Mel ;)
