Movies, W4WS, Zombies And A Weekend Round Up

Today is Captain Ninja Alex's Top Ten Movie Blogfest and wow, what a daunting task. I mean really, just ten? Come on, this is me we're talking, I couldn't pick ten favorites to save my life so I'm going with my ten favorite comfort movies. movies that I watch when I need a pick up, a laugh or even just to forget my problems for an hour or three. So here they are in no particular order...

The Lord of the Rings trilogy Three films, but one story so this counts as one and I watch one of these whenever I need an escape.

The Princess Bride This is always a guaranteed smile for me.

Goodfellas I work out a lot of aggression watching Henry and crew.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape? This is my fave Johnny Depp movie it's cathartic to watch for me.

Aliens Ellen Ripley is my first badass bitch and I still get a kick out of watching her battle those acid bleeding face huggers.

Silkwood This is my fave Meryl Streep film and one I get sucked into each time I see it on.

The Howling I watch this one whenever I can. I love my werewolves and it's my favorite of all time.

The Quiet Man I'm a sucker for the Duke and this one gets me every time.

Joan of Paris I love a good war story and this one is tops. A young woman risks her life to save downed British airmen.

The Mummy I can't help it. Brendan Fraser rocks this movie and it makes me laugh every time.

So these are my movies, go on and check out the other incredible participants here.

Writers 4 Writers

It's W4WS today and we are spotlighting Kyra Lennon and Angela Brown. Go to their sites and spread the word by Tweeting, posting on FB or just getting the word out about their awesome work on your site if you can.

SPOILERS AHOY

Oh. My. God. I can't believe I just did a 180 on Andrea, but man was I rooting for her, hoping she would outwit Governor Psycho Pants. Loved when she opened the door and let the walkers have at him. Too bad he survived. And now, NOW she's at his ghoulish mercies in that Dungeon of Torture. Yikes!

And Milton!! He's stepping up and taking a a stand. I sadly misjudged him as a twitchy weirdo with nefarious purposes. Speaking of twitchy weirdos, we have Alan, Tyrese's one-time companion. Man, what a little bitch. Tyrese apparently saved Alan's wife once upon a time and he can't handle that. He couldn't be The Man. Well boo hoo, asshole. Too bad so sad you lost your balls somewhere and couldn't man up. Dude's been getting on my last nerve since he first appeared. Someone should shoot him in the knee in front of an oncoming horde of walkers.

It is going down real soon and I can't wait for the big battle. Team Prison all the way.

SPOILERS OVER

This weekend was pretty awesome. I went to the Chicago St. Patrick's Day Parade with my sister and nephew. We saw a whole host of strange and wonderful sights including six foot leprechauns, green tutus on men, shamrock glasses and green hair. We get wild here in Chitown on St. Paddy's Day. Even me... ;D

  3. The Mummy was one of my all time favourites when I first started buying DVDs ... then the crappy sequels came around and kind of spoiled the franchise for me :(

LOTR is my favorite as well.

    1. Hey Alex, this was a great fest. So many wonderful movies and its great to know that my faves are the faves of so many other people. It was so hard to cut to just ten though. LOL Aliens is my favorite Cameron movie aside from Titanic.

  6. I loved LOTR. I think The Quiet Man was one of my mom's favorites. She loved anything with John Wayne.

  7. I counted LOTR as one too. And hey, I saw The Quiet Man on cable yesterday.

Walking Dead was great last night... I didn't quite do a 180, but I too loved the moment when she opened the door and let the walkers have at him. Only two episodes left this season and I have no idea where they're going to end up. Love it!

    1. LOTR is jut one story divided into three parts. :) I, too watched The Quiet Man on cable. What a great movie.

I really do not know where this season will finish, but wow, it just keeps getting more and more exciting. Poor Andrea! And I never thought I would say that.

  8. Melissa this a great list. There are a few I still haven't seen like Gilbert Grape, but its impossible to watch The Princess Bride withpout smiling.

    1. Thanks, Maurice! You will love Gilbert, it's a very compelling story with some terrific performances. And yes, Princess BRide is a source of many smiles. "He's only mostly dead." "Inconceivable!" ;)

  9. I heart Princess Bride (mostly dead is still slightly alive!). And the ending of The Howling WIGGED ME OUT!!!!!

That whole cat and mouse thing with Andrea and the Gov. wigged me out, too. But, see, she left him without the assurance of his being dead. As I learned from Zombieland, never forget to doubletap!!! :-)

    Replies
    1. Love Max! Howling did have a really creepy ending. Werewolves among us. LOL

You are absolutely right. Andrea should know that the monster is always still alive. Double tap the Gov for sure next time. She should have waited to see that he got devoured.

  10. you know I adore THE MUMMY too! Would love to have been Imhotep's Anc Su NaMun :))

  20. I couldn't choose 10 movies if I had a gun pointed to my head, it's just too hard for me!

WD was fairly tense throughout even if it felt a bit like a filler episode, a very well done one mind you.

    1. LOL I know what you mean, Daniel. It was very difficult culling out ten movies. In the end I just went with ten that I have seen over and over for various reasons.

WD was awesome. It did not feel like filler to me so much as last week's ep did. I can't wait to see how this all ends.

  21. Part of my participation in this blogfest is the result of your promotion of it, Melissa. Thank you!

I have to say you've assembled quite an impressive list. Yes, these are not, as you intimated to me before, cerebral, profound artistic choices. But film is not an exclusively artistic medium. Fun, escapist fare is every bit as meaningful as the work of Ingrid Bergman or Stanley Kubrick. I applaud you for your picks. I especially appreciated your selections of The Quiet Man, Goodfellas, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Aliens, LOTR Trilogy, and The Princess Bride. I haven't seen Silkwood or Joan of Paris, so I'll have to correct that soon.

    Great job :)

    1. Aww.. Thanks, Matt. That means a lot coming from you.

I'm happy to hear that you approve my list. They are some great films if not the most elevated ones. I went with plain old visceral enjoyment. What can I say? :) You should totally see Silkwood and Joan of Paris. They are terrific stories and I think Silkwood is one of the finest performances of Streep's career. I believe you will enjoy them and I am very happy to be able to give you some recommendations after all the wonderful ones you have given to me.

I screamed watching TWD, lol and cheered for Andrea to get
Governor Psycho Pants. Gosh that room has 50 shades all over it...yikes! Milton is going to kill GPP, if I have my vote. WE need a geek to step it up-Milton's our man ;D

that is one scary Chamber of Torture. I felt so bad when Andrea ended up there. Governor Psycho Pants is off the sanity chain and I hope both Andrea and Michonne take him down.

Go Milton! I think he's going to surprise us even more.

  23. Great list and very diversified. I loved Goodfella's and it made my top fifteen, but I had to narrow it. It was hard narrowing it to only ten.

Your movie list is awesome. I haven't seen Joan of Paris though.

Kyra and Angela are cool; I have visited either in a while. Thanks for the reminder.
